Sturgeon are living dinosaurs. Fisheries biologists have discovered that sturgeon existed as long as 200 million years ago. There are over 20 species referred to as sturgeon thought out the world, lake sturgeon is the common species found in select water systems of Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Manitoba, Ontario, Canada.
Lake sturgeon can grow to over 200lb and a length of 6 feet over its long lifetime. It can live well over 100 years of age and does not reach sexual maturity until 30 years old. In their natural habitat, they are bottom feeders using its elongated spade like snout to stir up the sand and slit feeding on clams, mussels, crayfish, worms, fish eggs and other dead fish.
